Real-World Awarded SBIR Docs & Templates
Each example provided on this page was used in successfully getting to the next stage of the SBIR process. Both fully awarded Phase I and Phase II proposal narratives and market opportunity examples are provided below to help founders structure their own proposals. These proposals follow the Department of Energy SBIR submittal structure.
All examples are redacted: personally identifying information and proprietary IP have been removed. Shared with authorization from the originating company.
Example Phase I Narrative & Market Opportunity
From Automated Monitoring of the Rhizosphere Using Graphite Electrodes — an awarded DOE Phase I SBIR.
Example Phase II / IIB Narrative & Market Opportunity
From Automated Monitoring of Subsurface Microbial Metabolism with Graphite Electrodes — the Phase IIB follow-on award.
Letter of Commitment / Support — Template & Example
Letters of Commitment from collaborators or end-users strengthen a proposal. Below is a fill-in-the-blank template and a real example from an awarded proposal.
Letter of Intent — Example
Some programs require a Letter of Intent before issuing an encouragement or discouragement letter. The example below received an encouragement letter but did not end up getting an award, despite the strong letter of support above — useful as a reference for the LOI format, not as a recipe for a win.
